Ask Dr. Bug - Spiders

<<< BACK

We have recently moved to Washington State and are now dealing with Wolf Spiders. Is there anything I can do to keep these spiders away from and out of the house? I don't want to use pesticides if I don't have to.

Most spiders are predatory creatures and feed on other insects.

There are several things you can do to prevent spiders from entering your home.

  1. Remove excessive debris or vegetation directly touching your foundation on the outside of your house.

  2. Caulk & seal all potential entry points to prevent not only the spiders from entering but other insects that the spiders might be feeding on.

  3. Place glueboards around suspected entry points to determine areas of infestation.

  4. Remove excessive boxes and storage materials from the inside of the house to minimize harborage areas.

  5. Make an exterior perimeter application of an insecticide to establish a barrier against all insects.

  6. Purchase an aerosol labeled for spiders and homes and keep handy for the occasional sighting. A dead spider can not produce more spiders.

  7. The best method of control is to hire a professional exterminator to inspect your home and prescribe a treatment.
