EASTERN CHIPMUNKS (Tamias striatus)

Biology

  • Length: 9-10 ½ inches including tail
  • Weight: 2.5 to 3 ounces
  • Has three dark dorsal stripes

Distribution/Habits

  • Hibernates in fall, become active in spring
  • Breed during spring and summer
  • Normally produce two litters a year with 2 to 7 young per litter
  • Prefer open wooded areas that provide trees and plants, food, nuts and seeds
  • Will nest beneath garages, wood sheds and other outbuildings
