FIREBRATS (Thermobia domestica)

Biology

  • Length: ½ inch
  • Grayish or brown with dark markings
  • Wingless, flat insect
  • Tapered, carrot-shaped body
  • Long antennae, and three long bristles on posterior end of abdomen

Distribution/Habits

  • Prefer to live outdoors under rocks, leaves, woodpiles and mulch
  • They can be found indoors in high temperature areas (usually 90º F or higher) such as boiler rooms, ovens, water heaters and attics.
  • They will consume or damage fabric, paper, books and wall paper.
