FORMOSAN SUBTERRANEAN TERMITE (Coptotermes formosanus)
Biology
- Swarmers are larger than other subterranean species – up to ½ inch in length (including wings).
- The body is a pale yellowish brown color.
- The wings are translucent and densely covered with tiny hairs.
- The soldiers head is oval shaped rather than elongated.
- The soldiers have an opening (the fontanelle) on the front of the head, which emits a sticky, milky white fluid when the soldier is disturbed.
Distribution/Habits
- The Formosan termite is the most aggressive and destructive termite species in the United States.
- Established in many southern states: AL, CA, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, SC, TX and HI.
- Ordinarily has colonies traceable to the soil, but they also form aerial nests without ground connection.
- Swarming occurs on warm, humid evenings in late spring/summer.
- Swarmers are attracted to lights.
