PIGEONS (Columbidae)

Biology

  • Length: About 13 inches.
  • Usually bluish-gray in color with black markings on the wings and a whitish rump, purple on the breast and blue on the abdomen
  • Small heads, short necks, stout bodies and short legs
  • Best-known species is the Common pigeon (Columba livia), whose wild ancestor is called the Rock dove. More than 200 domestic breeds as well as the variably colored feral pigeons are derived from this species.

Distribution/Habits

  • Found throughout the world except in cold northern/southern latitudes
  • Will roost, loaf, and nest in most urban areas as well as small rural communities
  • Feed on seeds, nuts, acorns, and insects
  • Their droppings deface and accelerate deterioration of statues, buildings and equipment.
  • They create a public health problem because of difcotes and ectoparasites associated with droppings and nests.
