House or English Sparrows (Family - Passeridae)
Biology
- Length: 5 ½ to 6 ½ inches
- Male is distinguished from all common native sparrows by its black throat and upper breast and ash gray crown.
- The female lacks the black throat, has a grayish brown head and rump, a reddish brown and black-streaked back; the breast and underparts are a dingy white color with a brownish tinge.
Distribution/Habits
- Found throughout the United States
- They nest in close proximity to each other.
- Fly and feed in small flocks
- They will build nests in rafters, gutters, protected ledges of buildings, and almost any elevated area that is somewhat protected where they can anchor their nest.
- They feed on a wide variety of cereals and seeds, young seedlings, buds of flowers and small soft fruit.
- They feed their young mainly insects.
