House or English Sparrows (Family - Passeridae)

Biology

  • Length: 5 ½ to 6 ½ inches
  • Male is distinguished from all common native sparrows by its black throat and upper breast and ash gray crown.
  • The female lacks the black throat, has a grayish brown head and rump, a reddish brown and black-streaked back; the breast and underparts are a dingy white color with a brownish tinge.

Distribution/Habits

  • Found throughout the United States
  • They nest in close proximity to each other.
  • Fly and feed in small flocks
  • They will build nests in rafters, gutters, protected ledges of buildings, and almost any elevated area that is somewhat protected where they can anchor their nest.
  • They feed on a wide variety of cereals and seeds, young seedlings, buds of flowers and small soft fruit.
  • They feed their young mainly insects.
